I really dislike March and April, it’s my least favorite time of year. I’ve felt this way ever since I was a child. Maybe it’s the Oregonian in me, remembering those endless rainy spring days. From summer through fall, I feel alive. Then winter brings the excitement of the holidays, followed by the hopefulness of a New Year and my birthday in February.
These months move in slow motion, yet they’re over before you even realize. You’ll get a warm, sunny day that makes life feel worth living, only to be sandwiched between two more gray ones. I find this time of year the hardest to stay present, as my mind looks forward to the summer days ahead.
This month, I made a point to do things, both old favorites and new, to break out of the springtime blues and find some joy in the mundane. These aren’t revolutionary, but they made me feel good, and I’m hoping they can do the same for you, no matter the season!
Things That Have Made Me Feel Good This Month
Bake or Cook a New Recipe: I tried (and failed) to make focaccia bread, but I nailed a batch of white chocolate macadamia nut cookies. I also made an effort to cook more meals at home — the kind that take a little extra work. It’s a simple way for me to decompress and reduce screentime after work.
GNO: Dinner and drinks at the end of the week (or mid-week happy hour!) really goes a long way! There's no better feeling than knowing it's Friday afternoon and that I'll soon be catching up with my friends over cocktails.
New Workout Classes: As a runner, breaking from my routine to try new classes is always a challenge. However, during this off-season time, I’ve been going to a new studio 1-2 times a week, and I absolutely love it!
Spring Closet Clean: Saying goodbye to the items I never wear to make room for new summer pieces. I’ve also been selling them on Depop to make a little extra cash, which will go right back into my wardrobe!
Long Walks: One part of this time of year that I can truly appreciate is the longer days. I love taking advantage of longer walks after work, listening to podcasts or music, or catching up with family and friends over the phone.
Find a New TV Show: I started Girls on HBO, and why did it take me so long to start? Not only is it laugh-out-loud funny, but it’s also incredibly relatable.
Sweet Treats: GoGreek, Salt & Straw, and Sweet Rose were just a few of the treats I enjoyed this month. Not into ice cream? Grab a coffee out — Lord knows I do plenty of that too.
Do Something For The First Time: Yes, this is vague, but for good reason! Go and do something you've been thinking about trying but haven’t had the courage to do. For me, it was trail running. The thought always felt daunting, but once I got out there, I’m so glad I did.
And best of all, it’s now May!
